Eleven people from the world of sports were inducted into The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum at the 15th Annual Induction Ceremony on Sunday, April 29, 2007,at The Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, NY.
The Honorees Included:
Senda Berenson – “The mother of women’s basketball,” she introduced the sport of women’s basketball in the U.S.
Bonnie Bernstein – One of the most recognizable and highly respected journalists in the field. In July, 2006, she signed on with ABC/ESPN.
Howard Cosell – Perhaps the most colorful and controversial national sports reporter and personality in American media.
Harry Haft – Haft was only 16 when he was sent to the concentration camps. Forced to fight other Jews in bare knuckle bouts for the entertainment of S.S. officers. Ultimately, escaping the camp, Harry traveled to America and became a pro boxer.
George Kalinsky – Known as the “Official Photographer for Madison Square Garden,” which has allowed him to create famous images of famous people.
Deena Kastor – Currently one of the top female distance runners in the world, grabbed the bronze medal in the women’s marathon at the 2004 Olympics.
